We believe in each student’s individual potential and we work tirelessly, in cooperation with families and schools, to support each student to success in their journey, both through school and in life.
About
The IFNA Education Department provides support to member community schools in areas including:
- Leadership, coaching and mentoring for school principals;
- Support for school operations and management;
- School improvement planning;
- Professional learning and development to teachers and other staff;
- Student addictions and guidance counselling
- Indigenous language and culture programming support.
Contracted Services
The IFNA Education Department provides the following services when requested:
- Special Education Services that provide cognitive and behavioural assessments/consultations, oral language/speech language consultations and special education supports;
- Consulting services for literacy and numeracy program development, evaluation and support;
- Support for communities to find, hire and retain teachers.
Home Away Program
The IFNA Education Department provides a holistic approach to support students enrolled in the HOME AWAY PROGRAM. Mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual supports include:
- One-on-one counselling;
- 24-hour mental health support;
- Approved cultural and spiritual activities;
- Proactive group programming;
- Promotion of healthy lifestyles;
- External referrals and assessments;
- Medical, optical, and dental care.
The team is built of Education, Wellness and Residence staff who work closely together to meet the best interest of student needs.
High School Application Forms
The IFNA Education program provides off-reserve supports for students who ordinarily live on reserve that wish to attend high school. At this time, there are no funding supports for students who do not ordinarily live on reserve. It is encouraged to seek support from Jordans Principles for those that do not qualify for funding through IFNA due to Indigenous Service Canada Agreements for on reserve supports.
These supports include:
- Liaising with other organizations
- Planning student engagement and retention activities;
- Educational Partnership Program (EPP) where IFNA consults with students, their families, communities and schools to develop and implement activities designed to provide supports that improve student retention and success rate (funding provided by Nishnawbe Aski Nation).
- Application to participate in the IFNA SSSP program (full form required)
- Application for providing Boarding Home services to the IFNA SSSP program

This position works along side community education programs and helping in facilitating and building attendance and retention rates among youth. The role will report to the Education Director.
Residence Supervisor (#171)

We're seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as an Education Residence Supervisor. This role plays a vital role in fostering a positive environment with a sense of community, promoting cultural preservation, and ensuring the well-being of residents and staff. The role will report to the Director, Education Services.
Wellness On-Call Worker (#158)
Under the direct supervision of the Wellness Manager, the Wellness Worker plays an important role in providing after-hours emergency mental health and wellness support to IFNA secondary students. The On-Call Worker will perform a diverse range of duties, ensuring prompt response and assistance during critical situations and contributing to the health and safety of our students.
Youth Multi-Purpose Worker (#157)
Under the direct supervision of the Residence Manager, the Youth Multi-Purpose Worker performs a range of duties to support the Residence Programs provided through the Independent First Nations Alliance (IFNA) within the areas of Wellness, Education and Residences. They provide administrative support to ensure programs are operating efficiently and meeting the needs of the students and team members.
Education Officer Thunder Bay (#143)
The Independent First Nations Alliance (IFNA) is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Education Officer to provide operational leadership and drive the growth of our education mandate. This role is crucial in ensuring the successful implementation of our strategic goals and objectives, particularly within our Academic, Wellness, and Residence programs and services. As the Education Officer, you will lead a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to secure funding, grants, and resources. Your efforts will build capacity within the department and contribute significantly to the success of our programs.

Post Secondary Student Pathways Navigator
The Post Secondary Student Pathways Navigator plays a vital role in supporting post-secondary, training, and career initiatives for students in IFNA communities. This position involves mentoring on-reserve community members attending post-secondary/training institutions and fostering relationships with colleges, universities, and training programs. Reporting to the Education Director, the Navigator collaborates closely with the Education team.
Youth Wellness Counsellor
As a Youth Wellness Counsellor, you'll be at the heart of our mission, providing culturally sensitive counselling to Indigenous youth aged 12 to 24. You'll help address mental health issues, emotional distress, trauma, and social concerns. By incorporating evidence-based therapeutic approaches and Indigenous healing practices, you'll empower these individuals to thrive, fostering resilience, self-determination, and growth. This position will be based in Sioux Lookout.
EPP Liaison
Are you ready to make an immediate impact? The Independent First Nations Alliance (IFNA) seeks a dedicated individual for the role of Education Partnership Program (EPP) Liaison. The EPP Liaison undertakes assigned activities in support of the EPP joint Implementation Plan that are designed to improve the scope and quality of education programs and services available to NAN First Nation students attending First Nation and provincially funded schools. This position is critical to the successful completion of EPP educational initiatives and for maintaining effective liaison with First Nations and assigned Provincial District School Boards (DSB’s) and their respective schools.

Secondary School Success Teacher
